Our History

The word An Nahl is an Arabic word that simply means “the bees”. In coming up with the name, An Nahl founders and members drew inspiration from bees way of life. Bees are known to have strong leadership, efficiency, solidarity and perfect teamwork. As such, they produce honey as a wonderful product and other by-products, whose quality and usefulness baffle the minds of scientists throughout history.

An Nahl started in mid 1980s. It started just as a group formed by friends, likeminded students (from Higher learning institutions). These friends or colleagues initially aimed at exchanging ideas on how to deal with social challenges while enjoying a cup of coffee/tea. Within few years of its establishment, the group expanded by including founders’ family members (Wives and children). The move aimed at ensuring sustainability and cohesion of the group and expansion of its mission.

From that point, the group organized merely family gatherings and festivities especially during Eid and Ramadhan. In addition, using funds contributed by its members, the group organized quiz competitions and galas to reward and support students who excelled in Education (in particular,” O” level and “A”Level exams).

It was on 7th January 2002 that group decided to shift from a group doing social work as a hobby to a formal organization. It acquired registration as a trusteeship known as An-Nahl Trust. At this point, the organization expanded its membership base and activities too.

From that moment on, the organization started supporting “youth empowerment” by organizing training on life skills and self-entrepreneurship. Quite a number of youth have benefited from these kinds of training.

The organization has also continued to support the education sector by annually facilitating scholarships to a handful of students from less privileged background in order to enable them pursue education. A number of youth are still benefitting from this program.

Furthermore, An Nahl also conducted research on private-owned schools and trained teachers and school owners. The trainings have been on the best practices in managing private owned schools. As an organization with a purpose, An-Nahl Trust members are of the mindset that giving is superior to receiving.

This value has enabled An-Nahl Trust to conduct most of its activities from members’ contributions. Since its inception, An-Nahl Trust has been a dynamic, flexible, learning organization that has been growing and changing in order to remain relevant, practical, efficient and sustainable.
